Trawler Yacht Design Means Plenty Of Power

A yacht is a relatively small vessel, typically used for commercial purposes such as cruising or racing.  There are many different types of yachts, each with their own distinct characteristics.  For example, some common yachts include: the sloop, the ketch, the yawl, the schooner, and the trawler yacht designs.

For those who are unfamiliar with boats, the fact that there are many different types of yachts might come as a surprise.  However, the different yacht designs are meant to serve different purposes when traveling the open water.  The trawler yacht design allows the trawler yacht to be effectively used as a live-aboard yacht and a cruise yacht.

Basic Information

The trawler yacht ranges in size from 32 to 70 feet long.  As far as speed is concerned, the trawler can usually go as fast as about 10 knots.  This is quite slow compared to other yacht designs; in fact, only a sailboat is slower, making the trawler yacht ideal for leisurely vacations or permanent living.  The yacht can hold anywhere from two to eight people comfortably for long periods of time.

If you are looking to purchase a new trawler, you will be faced with a price tag of anywhere from $150,000 to $1,000,000.  A used vessel is relatively inexpensive, with prices beginning at $50,000.

Unique Characteristics Of A Trawler Yacht Design

A trawler yacht design has several distinct features that distinguish it from other types of yachts.  It was named for a commercial fishing trawler because it shares many of the same characteristics.  A trawler yacht is commonly referred to as a cruising trawler to distinguish it from its fishing counterpart.

One of these features that the two trawler yacht designs share is the displacement hull.  Additionally, the pilothouse on both types of trawler yachts is always raised and the generally large engine and mechanical room are located underneath the main cabin.  The trawler yacht design also features a single engine and a large capacity for fuel.  All of these features, which are unique to the trawler yacht design, make it extremely seaworthy and a popular vessel for long-term cruises and living.

Meeting Your Needs

While the trawler yacht design might not be the best option for you if you are looking for a racing yacht, it is a great option for leisurely vacationing or even permanent living.  After you determine what you are looking for in a yacht, consider a trawler yacht for a reliable, seaworthy vessel.
